Legendary runners Eliud Kipchoge (male) and Sifan Hassan (female) will compete in the Amsterdam Marathon, which marks the 50th anniversary of the competition, on October 19.

“Amsterdam is where I have always felt the pure energy of sport – where people and the city come together,” Kipchoge said at the announcement of the elite roster for the Amsterdam Marathon 2025 earlier this week.

Kipchoge has won 11 major titles, including four in London (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019), five in Berlin (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2023), once in Chicago (2014) and Tokyo (2021). He has also twice broken the world record with 2 hours 1 minute 39 seconds at the Berlin Marathon 2018 and 2 hours 1 minute 9 seconds at this tournament in 2022, and won two Olympic gold medals, when he returned to Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

At the age of 40, Kipchoge no longer competes at the highest level. But whenever it appears, the greatest marathon in history is also awaited by the running world.

At the men’s Amsterdam Marathon 2025, Kipchoge will compete with Africa’s top four runners: Tamirat Tola, Leul Gebresilase, Laban Korir and Jonathan Korir – who all set a goal of breaking the record of 2 hours 3 minutes 38 seconds set by Tola in 2021.

Among them, the Ethiopian athlete, Tola is best rated for winning the 2024 Olympic gold medal in Paris, the 2023 New York City Marathon and the 2022 Eugene World Cup. Gebresilase, 29, had the best personal record (PB) of 2 hours 4 minutes 2 seconds at the 2018 Dubai Marathon.

On the Kenyan side, Laban Korir – Kipchoge’s teammate at the NN Running Team’s training camp in Kaptagat – has competed in the Amsterdam Marathon four times and achieved a record time of 2 hours 5 minutes 54 seconds in 2016. Jonathan Korir, Kipchoge’s neighbour and best friend, is also expected to surprise after reaching the PB 2 hours 6 minutes 40 seconds in Enschede this year.

"Running in Amsterdam is a feeling of nowhere to get. Here, I hear the cheers of people who have seen me start from this small street. I want to give them the win," Hassan shares.

The participation of Kipchoge and Hassan makes this year’s Amsterdam Marathon even more special for the Dutch. It is not only the 50th time the award has been held, but also coincides with the celebration of the 750th anniversary of the founding of the city of Amsterdam. From the ancient canals, the Vondelpark park to the Olympic Stadium podium – where departures and destinations are laid out – all will be covered in the colours of the festival.

Established in 1975, the Amsterdam Marathon started out as a small local race, before evolving into one of the most prestigious marathons in Europe. Since 1991, when it was transferred to the organization in the autumn, the competition gradually affirmed its position and became the World Athletics Platinum Label Race - the title for marathons of the highest international standard.

The Amsterdam Marathon is considered one of the most beautiful and fastest running routes on the planet. Athletes depart and arrive at the Olympic Stadium – the Dutch sports icon – and then pass the Rijksmuseum, the ancient canals, the lush Vondelpark, and the windy Amstel riverbank – where colours blend with the reverberation of the audience.
